EMUI 9 Stable Releases – Find Your Huawei/Honor Devices’ Android Pie Update!
ever since the official release of Android 9 Pie for the Google Pixel smartphones, we’ve been tracking the update progress of all the major Android device makers. Apart from Google, device makers like Xiaomi, HMD Global, Sony, Motorola, OnePlus, and Sharp have released Android Pie updates for several of their devices. Among the top two Android device makers, Samsung has only released Android Pie beta updates for their flagship Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 devices while Huawei and its sub-brand Honor have released stable updates for 8 devices and beta updates for 14 devices (and launched 5 devices with the latest Android version). Whatever your thoughts on the company’s stance on bootloader unlocking, it’s hard to deny they haven’t been providing adequate software support for their large portfolio of devices.
With such a large number of Android devices sold in so many countries, Huawei/Honor have to support many software builds to cover all regions where their devices are sold. That, unfortunately, means some regions will get updates before other regions. Take the recent EMUI 9 global release as an example. We were told that the update was rolling out for a few devices in Asian Pacific countries, but we’re also aware that the update is also rolling out in some European countries.

If you own a Huawei or Honor device that’s set to get the Android Pie-based EMUI 9 update and live in an area that hasn’t yet received the update, we’ll describe a few options you have to get the update manually. First, here are all the possible EMUI 9 stable firmware versions you can update to, and which devices they belong to.

How to Update?
First things first, if you live in an eligible region and own the right device, you may have a stable EMUI 9 update already waiting for you. Here’s a video from Huawei which shows you how to get the update.
You can also use the free Firmware Finder service to manually find a firmware to sideload, but you have to be sure that you’re flashing the right firmware. Unfortunately, you can’t flash out-of-region firmwares or firmwares that haven’t yet been approved for your device. However, our friends over at FunkyHuawei.club provide a (paid) tool that simplifies the update process, lets you rebrand your device to another region, and flash unapproved firmware versions. For instance, if you update to EMUI version 9.0.0.171 on the Mate 20 Pro or 9.0.0.172 on the Mate 20 X, the OEM Unlock toggle becomes available once again so it’s possible to unlock the bootloader. My Huawei Mate 20 X (provided for review by FunkyShop.club) is currently on EMUI version 9.0.0.146 and doesn’t present an update to 9.0.0.172, so I would either need to wait or use one of these third-party services to update immediately. If you’re interested in using either Firmware Finder or FunkyHuawei.club, all you need to know about your own device is its model name and the build number of the software it’s running.
To find the software information for your device, go to Settings > System > About Phone. The model name tells you what device you have, while the build number tells you what software build it is running. For example, model name EVR-L29 is the international, dual-SIM Huawei Mate 20 X. Many users get confused by the build number, but the format is actually quite simple. Here’s how to interpret a build number of 9.0.0.146(C636E3R1P11patch01). The first three numbers (9.0.0) tells you the Android version (Android 9 Pie). The next three numbers (146) tells you the update level. The three numbers after the C (C636) tells you the region (Asia). Lastly, any letters and numbers after the region code just tell you more information about the exact build you’re running—which isn’t really necessary to know for our purposes
